Etsuji Noguchi 野口悦士
New works by Etsuji Noguchi are now available at ARJ Los Angeles.
Born in Saitama and drawn to the southern island of Tanegashima by its Yakishime pottery tradition, Noguchi learned ceramics from the ground up, mining his own clay and firing in traditional kilns before apprenticing under Karatsu master Takashi Nakazato. His practice has since taken him from Japan to Italy, the U.S., and Denmark, where he built a wood kiln for KH Würtz, the studio behind ceramics for Noma and some of the world's most acclaimed restaurant tables.
The work is calm and unhurried. Surfaces rich with iron-oxide patina, rust-red tones that recall natural landscapes, a texture that deepens with use. Pieces that belong to no specific era or place, and that quietly enhance what they hold without demanding attention.
