Asami Hatanaka | Asamono

Asamono by Asami Hatanaka

Born and raised in Japan, Asami Hatanaka is a ceramic artist now based in Los Angeles. Before establishing her independent practice, she spent several years working at a community ceramics studio in West Adams. Using wheel-thrown and hand-built methods, Hatanaka creates forms that retain the subtle irregularities and physical presence of clay.

Asamono combines Asami’s name with mono, the Japanese word for “things.” The collection brings the scale and utility of Japanese tableware into conversation with the sensibility of her life in California. Broad areas of glaze and visible brushstrokes move across simple forms, giving the surfaces a painterly quality.

Hatanaka is the first Los Angeles-based artisan whose work we have carried at ARJ, extending our collection into the city we call home.
