Kanjo Omata
Kanjo Omata
Kanjo Omata is an emerging ceramic artist specializing in teaware. Born in Taiwan, raised partly in Tokyo, and trained in Tokoname, he graduated from the Tokoname Tounomori Ceramic Art Research Institute and studied kyūsu, the Japanese tradition of teapot making. Drawing from diverse East Asian tea cultures, Omata explores how different forms and histories can meet within a single vessel.
For Omata, a teapot is a composition of curves connecting the body, mouth, spout, handle, and lid. Their relationships allow a form to move between classical and contemporary, functional and sculptural. Much of his work is yakishime, high-fired unglazed stoneware shaped by flame, kiln atmosphere, and chance. He also explores the subtle tension created by bringing different ceramic forms and techniques together, including mogake, a Tokoname firing technique that uses seaweed to leave organic markings on the clay.
