Yamada Yutaro
Based in Tokoname, Japan’s historic center of teapot production, Yutaro Yamada creates handmade Japanese teapots, known as kyūsu, and other tea wares. His work is known for its remarkable lightness and balance, remaining comfortable in the hand even when filled. His process often begins with locally dug clay, carefully sieved, water-levigated and aged to achieve the color, texture and character he seeks.
Kyūsu require more finishing after forming and firing than many other ceramic objects. Yamada carefully polishes each piece, fits the lid, washes and dries it by hand, and checks it for leaks. His attention to weight, balance, the integrated ceramic strainer and the flow of the pour results in tea ware that is both beautiful and practical, made to develop greater character through continued use.
