Eiji Matsumura (松村英治)
Born in 1970 in Kumamoto City, Japan, Eiji Matsumura is a renowned ceramic artist based in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture. He earned his degree in sculpture from the Graduate School of Sculpture at Kanazawa College of Art in 1997 and honed his ceramic craft at the Tokoname City Ceramic Research Institute, graduating in 1999.
Matsumura believes that a vessel is only complete when food is served on it — the final touch that brings each piece to life. He effortlessly combines beauty with functionality, designing pieces that feel natural in the hands and inviting for everyday use. Inspired by southern pottery traditions of Thailand, Vietnam, Okinawa, and Korea, his pieces radiate warmth and freedom. Using clay sourced directly from the mountains, Matsumura embraces the imperfections that emerge from the harmony of clay and glaze, creating a quiet charm that only deepens with time.
