About Hataman Touen

Founded in 1926 and celebrating its centennial this year, Hataman Touen is based in Okawachiyama, known as the “Village of the Secret Kilns,” in Saga Prefecture in southwestern Japan.

During the seventeenth century, the Saga domain established its protected official kiln in this secluded mountain village. Nabeshima porcelain was created there for the ruling Nabeshima family and presented as prestigious gifts to the shogunate, the Imperial Court, and other feudal lords.

This history gave rise to an exacting porcelain tradition known for luminous white surfaces, controlled color, delicate painting, and an elegant use of open space. Today, fifth-generation artisan Shuuji Hataishi carries this heritage forward while exploring new forms, finishes, and collaborations across fashion and design, including projects with Nike, Marimekko, BEAMS, and Credor.

About the Workshop

During this 60-minute session, each participant will color a Bird of Paradise flower design on a Hataman Touen porcelain tumbler using traditional overglaze painting techniques. Created exclusively for this workshop, the Bird of Paradise design pays tribute to the official flower of Los Angeles. The outline will be applied in advance, allowing participants to concentrate on color and detail within the composition.

The tumbler will be the same porcelain tumbler featured in Hataman Touen’s Texture and Restaurant Maison collections (retail value $130). Exceptionally thin and lightweight, the tumbler has a matte finish, a gold rim, and a gently curved drinking edge.

No ceramics or painting experience is required, and beginners are welcome. All tools, colors, and workshop supplies are provided and sourced from Japan. Workshop capacity is limited. Advance registration is recommended.

Firing and Delivery

Following the workshop, each tumbler will be kiln-fired to permanently set the overglaze colors onto the porcelain. Once firing and final inspection are complete, the finished piece will be packed in an original Hataman Touen gift box. Complimentary shipping to the address provided during registration and in-store pickup will both be available.

Subtle variations in color and finish are a natural result of hand coloring and kiln firing, making every completed tumbler unique.

Cancellation Policy

Due to limited seating, all sales are final and nonrefundable. If you notify us at least 72 hours before the workshop, we will provide store credit for the ticket amount to use toward ARJ merchandise purchases. To cancel and request store credit, email us at help@arj.la. Please note that we are unable to honor rescheduling requests with less than 72 hours’ notice.
