Sayaka Wakaiki

Introducing Sayaka Wakaiki

Working from Awaji Island in western Japan, Sayaka Wakaiki creates ceramics that feel as though they have been shaped by the landscape itself. She studied at Kyoto Traditional Crafts University College before working and apprenticing in Tamba, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and a pottery community with a history stretching back to the 12th century. The region’s tradition of functional, expressive ceramics helped form the technical foundation of her practice.

Wakaiki established her independent studio in 2022. She describes her approach as a search for natural, beautiful forms and soft expressions of clay and glaze. Her miniature bud vases resemble stones, seeds and weathered fragments, with individual silhouettes that become especially vivid when paired with a single flower. Her dorosai incense holders preserve the gentle texture of clay and its subtle irregularities. Made for moments of rest and reflection, these intimate objects express Wakaiki’s hope that her work will become a small but meaningful part of everyday life.
