Sakuzan 作山窯
Sakuzan 作山窯
Sakuzan is a Mino ware kiln based in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, in the heart of central Japan. The Mino ware tradition traces back to the mid-3rd century and today accounts for roughly half of all tableware produced in Japan. Founded in 1952 by Sakuichi Takai as a ceramics painting studio, the kiln grew across three generations into a full pottery operation. Under third-generation president Nobuyasu Takai, Sakuzan moved deliberately away from the mass-produced industrial ceramics that dominate the region, guided by the belief that well-made tableware becomes most itself when paired with food and shared at the table.
Working with fourteen kinds of clay, hundreds of proprietary glazes, and three distinct firing methods, the studio pursues a sensory range that spans velvety mattes to kiln-altered organic surfaces. Every piece is shaped and finished by hand to draw out the natural character of the clay, so subtle variations in glaze, color, and texture are not imperfections but signatures of the process itself.
