Tongari Santa
Tongari Santa
Tongari Santa, whose name means "pointy Santa" in Japanese, is a hand-carved wooden figure made in Toyama, Japan, distinguished by its tall, tapered silhouette. Each figure is carved individually, with faces, beards, hairstyles, and buttons varying from piece to piece. The eyes are painted last, a moment the makers describe as when the figure finally comes to life. Now in its 28th year, the Tongari Santa is produced in collaboration with carvers from Inami, a district in Toyama with a 250-year tradition of woodcarving, with each piece still finished by hand.
