Description
Each piece in this collection is handcrafted by Junzo Maekawa, the fourth-generation master of Kenzan Kiln in Tokoname, Japan, one of the country's Six Ancient Kiln sites with a pottery tradition stretching back to the 12th century.
Known as kurokinsai, or "black gold," Maekawa's signature finish is achieved through kiln firing, where the balance of oxygen in the kiln determines the final color: more oxygen yields warmer gold tones, less produces a deeper black. The result is a surface that is both rustic and luminous, with each piece carrying a unique harmony of the two.
