Mori Kougei Rays Round Wood Plate 14" - Urushi
Description
Kyoto Lacquer Meets Tokushima Wood Veneer
Two historic Japanese crafts converge in a single, magnificent 14-inch plate. This exceptional piece features a shimmering White Sycamore wood veneer from Tokushima, finished with premium, natural urushi lacquer from the legendary Tsutsumi Asagichi Urushi-ten workshop in Kyoto. The result is a quiet, masterful presence that grounds any table setting, transitioning effortlessly from thoughtful everyday meals to elevated formal occasions.
A Living Shimmer: The Rays Pattern
Beneath the lustrous surface lies Mori Kougei’s signature Kōsen-bari (Rays) technique. Micro-thin wood veneers are meticulously hand-cut into precise geometric triangles and arranged in a radial sunburst pattern from the center. This geometry interacts dynamically with the natural ripple figure of the White Sycamore. As light shifts across the plate, the pattern sinks into the lacquer's deep amber warmth and surfaces with a delicate, ethereal shimmer—giving a single object the commanding presence of something far larger.
Ten Thousand Years of Resilience
Natural urushi lacquer has been revered in Japan since the ancient Jōmon period, over 10,000 years ago. Renowned for its durability, this organic finish is highly resistant to heat, acids, and alkalis. Far from a delicate display piece, this plate is a living object meant to be used; with time and handling, the resilient lacquer film actually matures—steadily deepening in richness, warmth, and translucent sheen the longer it is loved.

About Mori Kougei
Master Veneer Craft from Tokushima, Japan
Founded in 1953 in Tokushima, a city on the island of Shikoku in southern Japan, Mori Kougei has spent over 70 years perfecting the art of Tsuki-Ita: slicing natural wood into paper-thin sheets with a blade, then reading the grain of each piece to compose it into something greater. Now in its third generation under craftsman Hiroyuki Mori, the studio carries forward a practice rooted in inherited knowledge and an acute sensitivity to wood as natural art.
Working across more than 90 wood species sourced from around the world, Mori Kougei's artisans arrange varying grains and tones into geometric compositions, including their signature Kōsen-bari technique, in which veneer triangles radiate outward from a center point. The result is a tray that shifts with the light as you tilt it, the surface appearing to glow from within.
