Motoyuki's creations reflect a deep appreciation for the unique interaction between clay and glaze, which he finds fascinating. The tactile experience of his work evokes the sensation of rough, earthy clay combined with the subtle shine of pebbles, creating a textured, almost organic feel. His pieces are celebrated for their complex, layered glazes and their ability to capture the beauty of raw, natural materials in a contemporary form.
While the piece is glazed, the coarse clay may absorb food colors and odors more readily during the first few uses. It is recommended to start with light-colored or mildly scented foods. If food is left in the cup for a long period, colors and odors may penetrate the crackle glaze. To prevent this, it is recommended to apply a "sealant" treatment before use.
As each piece is handmade, slight variations in color, shape, and size may occur compared to the photographs.

About Motoyuki Tonoike
Motoyuki Tonoike is a Japanese ceramist based in Tokoname and the surrounding Chita Peninsula. His route to pottery began outside the field, working in advertising before completing the Tokoname Tounomori Ceramics Research Institute in 2019. In one of Japan’s historic pottery regions, he has developed a material-led practice centered on unrefined clay, natural ash, and firing.
Tonoike varies wood-ash recipes, clay bodies, and surface treatments from one firing to the next. Each kiln opening is something like a laboratory, where he examines the results of individual clay and glaze tests and determines which combinations to pursue further. From matcha bowls and teapots to serving pieces and sculptural vessels, the coarse grain of the clay remains palpable beneath the ash glaze, giving his work a strong physical presence.
