Description

2500BC is a stick incense inspired by the incense culture of ancient Egypt around 2500 BCE. It is the first chapter in √595's series tracing the origins of perfume.

Its three main ingredients are kyphi, frankincense, and myrrh, all tied in ancient Egypt to prayer, ritual, and the evening. Kyphi is a compound incense blended from more than a dozen materials, including resin, fruit, herbs, honey, and wine.

The scent is spicy and primitive, solemn and timeless. √595 layers dried and liquid frankincense and myrrh to give it depth when burned, so it sits easily in a modern room.

Each box holds 40 sticks. Each stick burns for about 15 minutes.

About IZUMI KAN (和泉侃) / THE ROOT 595

√595 (Root 595) is an incense brand from Awaji Island, Japan. The name refers to the year 595, when the Nihon Shoki records agarwood drifting ashore on Awaji. It is the oldest written record of incense in Japan. Awaji began producing incense in the late Edo period and today makes more of it than any other region in Japan.

√595 draws on that history to explore the roots of scent. Its research follows three paths: traditional recipes and methods, new plant materials, and the effect of scent on the body and on space.

The brand is directed by artist Kan Izumi of IK STUDIO and produced by Kunjudo, an Awaji incense maker founded in 1893. Working with artists, designers, and specialists, √595 combines traditional incense-making with new blends. Each product is the result of an experiment, made to bring scent into daily life as a ritual.
