THE ROOT 595 JINKOH Incense
Description
Jinkoh is a stick incense that interprets agarwood, the aromatic wood at the origin of Japanese incense culture. Agarwood forms when an Aquilaria tree deposits resin in response to injury, and it is one of the most valued materials in incense.
The scent is deep and woody, with a lighter, floating quality like a veil in the air. Agarwood is blended with ambrette and black pepper.
√595 takes its name from the year 595, when the Nihon Shoki records agarwood drifting ashore on Awaji Island. Kunjudo, an Awaji incense maker founded in 1893, produces it.
Each box holds 40 sticks. Each stick burns for about 15 minutes.

About IZUMI KAN (和泉侃) / THE ROOT 595
√595 (Root 595) is an incense brand from Awaji Island, Japan. The name refers to the year 595, when the Nihon Shoki records agarwood drifting ashore on Awaji. It is the oldest written record of incense in Japan. Awaji began producing incense in the late Edo period and today makes more of it than any other region in Japan.
√595 draws on that history to explore the roots of scent. Its research follows three paths: traditional recipes and methods, new plant materials, and the effect of scent on the body and on space.
The brand is directed by artist Kan Izumi of IK STUDIO and produced by Kunjudo, an Awaji incense maker founded in 1893. Working with artists, designers, and specialists, √595 combines traditional incense-making with new blends. Each product is the result of an experiment, made to bring scent into daily life as a ritual.
