Eiji Matsumura, born in 1970 in Kumamoto City, Japan, is a ceramicist working from his studio in Agui, Aichi Prefecture. He spent his early twenties traveling across Asia, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, before pursuing formal sculpture studies at Kanazawa College of Art, graduating from the sculpture program in 1997. He completed the ceramics program at the Tokoname City Ceramic Research Institute in 1999, then worked in a professional pottery factory before establishing his own studio.
His signature technique is nanbanyaki, an unglazed, wood-fired approach with roots in Southeast Asia, China, and Okinawa. Using iron-rich clay and no glaze, he fires each piece three times, sanding carefully between firings. The result is a surface that looks weighty and ancient but feels smooth and light in the hand. Despite their visual presence, even his largest plates are unexpectedly easy to hold.
He cooks for his family nearly every day, and that attentiveness to use runs through every decision he makes: the grip of the foot ring, the angle of the rim, the way food settles and reads against the clay. Durable enough for professional kitchens, and made to deepen in color and character over years of use.
