The Umezume pattern is a cherished original design passed down carefully through generations at Hataman Touen.

In this pattern, the plum blossom petals are meticulously painted with a thick layer of white, creating a captivating three-dimensional effect. The surrounding dots are delicately hand-drawn using a palette of five different colors.

The resulting three-dimensional plum motif exudes a gentle, inviting ambiance. Running your fingers over it will surely warm your heart.

Plum blossoms have long held significance and reverence in Chinese culture, earning them the title of "Hundred Flower Sakigake." They are admired for their ability to bloom even in the lingering cold of early spring, symbolizing perseverance and resilience in challenging conditions. Introduced to Japan around the 8th century, they became a favorite of the aristocracy of that era.

Today, you can still find plum blossoms featured prominently as divine crests at Yushima Tenjin Shrine, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. This tradition traces back to Sugawara no Michizane, a court noble and scholar from the Heian period, who had a deep fondness for plum blossoms.

As time marched on, the plum blossom motif found widespread use in various crafts, attire, architecture, and more, symbolizing the arrival of spring. Alongside evergreen pine and hardy bamboo, plum blossoms, with their fragrant blooms in early spring, are celebrated as one of the 'three friends of the cold season,' cherished by people during the Edo period who valued good fortune.
